Book Review of From
Beltane Magic by Jacqueline Paige:
Step into a world of magic and passions....
Take a dash of spice, heat it
Add a flash of magic and watch the sparks fly
Toss in a killer that's targeting women
Add a handful of witches from all paths to stir it all together...
Each were
willing to spend their lives alone and safe; until they’re touched by Beltane
Magic.
Can they
survive their pasts to be together as they struggle to find a killer before the
wheel turns again?
Leena is a woman that is gentle in everything, her
personality and moods. She always feels maternal with her closest friends and
would go out of their way to look after any one of them. Her ability of
controlling the elements and knowledge of plants make her magic abilities
strong and unbreakable. She is a leader at work and in life, always
working hard to keep those around her close, but never allowing anyone to get
too close.
To the outside world she is just Leena Duncan, a quiet woman
who works a normal job and lived a quiet life.
A few times a year she can openly use her magical gifts at
celebrations within a small community of people she calls friends.
Having lived through the horrors that can come from the
hands of someone you thought loved you; she decided never loving again would
prevent more emotional scarring.
It takes one man at a rainy Beltane celebration to change
everything she is comfortable with and one killer to change her safe
world.
Owen is a man that reflects humor and cavalier vibrations to
others, he is gentle and caring as is his ability to draw negative and heal
others. If you didn’t know him, you would never realize he came from
violence. Knowing how the real world can be, he has vowed to never put
himself into the position, or allow anyone else that could open up the world he
has carefully sealed shut forever.
He creates worlds and puts them on paper to entertain
others. After years of using his imagination he finds out his friends can
do things he thought only his mind created.
For his entire adult life Owen Grey has always played it
safe and kept to his own world of writing, never getting too close to anyone.
Having lived a nightmare growing up he would never take the
chance of repeating history. He may write about happily-ever-after, but
knows it is pure fantasy and doesn’t exist.
Until her . . .

Book Review:
If you read my
review of “The Solstice Heat” you know I have come to love all books by
Jacqueline Paige. She is definitely a
new favorite author. “From Beltane Magic”
is the first book in the Magic Seasons Series.
This is the story of Leena and Owen.
It is actually about all eight friends, but the focus of this book is
definitely the story of these two.
Once again I was drawn
into the lives of these people. This
book introduces all the characters, their strengths and flaws. It also gives us the first pictures of our
killer. Tantalizing little glimpses that
make me want to devour the rest of the books right away.
Ms. Paige is one of
my favorite new-to-me authors. She
combines just the right amount of beautiful storytelling, suspense, and
heat. And of course the ending leaves
you waiting for the next book. Thankfully
I have it so I am not waiting impatiently for it to arrive.
These are books you just have to read.
I definitely give this story 5 out of 5 clouds.

About A.K. Alexander
I started writing when I was nine-years-old. I used to write short stories on my dad’s notepads. One day he read one and he said to me, “You are a writer.” It stuck. My dad is still my biggest supporter and he is also my mentor in many ways. I went to college at The University of Southern California. My parents though didn’t think that “creative writing” at USC was a major that would likely be lucrative in the long run, so I figured I would be logical and look at writing in the journalistic field. God (the Universe), etc. had a different plan for me. Soon after I graduated from USC I gave birth to my first son. He was six weeks premature and he had some health issues, which caused me to decide that going into a career at that time would not benefit my son. So, I stayed home with him and I wrote my first book. That first book is tucked away in a box somewhere because it’s pretty darn bad, but it gave me the confidence I needed to know that I could start, write, and finish a book. From that point on, it took me twelve years to become a published author and several manuscripts. It has been a wonderful and amazing process, and although many challenges have presented themselves along the way, I have never quit writing. It is my passion! My other passion is Horses. These amazing animals are very dear to my heart and I have been known to take in “strays.” My daughter and I are very active in the horse world. My daughter is involved in pony club and three day eventing.
I enjoy work with other writers when I can , especially kids. I designed a program for young writers to help them learn how to write short stories and picture books to writing complete novellas for older kids. I have mentored several students now and it’s a joyful experience to see young writers and their creative minds at work. It is something I am working on expanding with some local teachers in my area.
Family and friends are extremely important to me. I am the proud mother of three amazing kids who have always supported me and are just great, awesome human beings (yes, I know I sound like every mother in the world about their kids, but I really mean it). My husband is my best friend and a very patient man, which is a real positive—he is married to a writer after all. We also have three dogs, a kitty, and eight horses.
When not writing, riding, or being a taxi-cab driver for my youngest, I try to find time to do a little yoga, meditate or cooking. I love cookbooks and cooking!

Book Review:
“Holly
Jennings wanted to get this son of a b…”
She needed to see him stretched out, strapped down on a gurney. She yearned to watch the hypo hooked up to
his veins, releasing the venomous fluid that would flow through his body,
causing it to gradually shut down.
Better yet, Holly wanted to take her nine-millimeter Glock, put it to his
temple, and pull the trigger.”
Now
that is what you call a hook. How can
you not want to keep reading when that is the first paragraph of the book? Daddy’s Home is not for the faint of heart. This murder mystery tackles the twisted mind
of a killer, which can be a terrifying place to be… especially when he’s not
alone.
But
this book is more than just a mystery and compelling forensic nightmare. The author brings in romance, suspense, and a
good creeping chill… just for fun. This
is not my typical fare for reading as I tend to prefer a good romance or fun
fantasy novel; but if you like murder and suspense with a dash of romance then
this book is perfect for you.
Well
written with an easy reading style, I give this book 4 out of 5 dark clouds.

Book Review of Change of Address
Book
Synopsis:
Title: Change
of Address
Author: Natalie-Nicole Bates
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Author: Natalie-Nicole Bates
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Saved from a traumatic past and successful in her present as a home care
nurse, Josselyn Adler’s dream of home ownership in the idyllic town of Unity
are dashed to pieces when Dr Ben Parnell, a cancer specialist, shows up on her
doorstep claiming to be the rightful owner of the house—and Ben has a will to
prove it! To Josselyn, the house represents
a new start in her life. With a stable home, hopefully a much wanted family
wouldn’t be far behind.
After a near career-ending
allegation is made, Ben has returned home to lick his wounds. But now he must
prove Josselyn’s claim to be a fake, that she used her position as a live-in
nurse to his sick father to ingratiate herself into his good graces. But as he
gets to know her, he can tell by her shy, often standoffish behavior, that Josselyn is a woman who has been deeply hurt in her past.
Although he is attracted to the dark haired beauty that has invaded his life,
he is still suspicious of her true motives and her past involvement with his
father.

Book Excerpt:
When
she arrived at the foot of the stairs, the front door rattled. Fear, cold and
stark, rose up in her throat and choked her as she heard the lock snap and
watched, rooted to the floor, the creaky old door jiggle in its frame. The
anticipation mingled with fright, produced a potent, sick feeling churning
inside her like the bad horror movie she’d recently viewed on late-night cable
television.
After
what seemed an eternity, the door flung open. The first thought entering her
brain was a ghost had entered her home. A younger, blonder visage of Morgan
stood in the threshold. Before she could utter his name, a second, more
coherent thought followed; a ghost wouldn’t use a key.
The
man in the doorway took one step inside and stopped abruptly, clenched his jaw,
and stared. The familiar stranger invading her new home could only be one
person.
“My
goodness, you’re Ben! You’re Morgan’s son!” she exclaimed.
“Well,
we know who I am. Now who the hell are you, and why are you trespassing in my
house?”
“Your
house?” she asked with disbelief. “This is my home. Morgan gave it to
me!”
“I
don’t know who you are, lady, but I suggest you get a move on it. I’ll give you
five minutes before I call the police.” He pointed to his platinum-cased
wristwatch for emphasis.
“Don’t
bother waiting.” She reached into her handbag and removed her cell phone. With
shaking fingers, she punched in 911.
The
line connected after the second ring. “911, what is your emergency?” asked the
female dispatcher.
“My
name is Josselyn Adler. I’m the new owner of 22 Little Pine Road. A man has let
himself into my home and is now threatening me.” Although she was quaking on
the inside, she strove to keep her voice and demeanor strong and confident.
“I
have an officer on the way, Ms. Adler. Would you like to stay on the line with
me until he arrives?” she offered.
“No,
thank you. I’ll be fine,” she assured her.
As
she disconnected her phone, Ben’s gaze burned into her. She wouldn’t give him
the satisfaction of showing any fear. While growing up, she had dealt with her
share of tormentors. One forty-year-old, blond-haired bully was not going to
intimidate her or drive her from a home that was rightfully hers.
“Very
nice performance,” he said snidely.
“Excuse
me?” She furrowed her brow and made eye contact. Ben Parnell had his father’s
glacial, blue eyes.
“Any
moment one of Unity’s finest will be arriving to play knight in shining armor
and save the poor maiden from the big, bad wolf.”
Before
she could utter a word in reply, a black patrol car came to a screeching halt
on the street. An officer threw open the car door and made long, quick strides
to the house. His uniform and Unity Police Department baseball cap matched the
color of his car.
A
lump formed in her throat. As she was growing up, a police car in front of the
house and an officer at the door meant her father was in some sort of trouble
yet again.
“Good
evening, Miss. I’m Officer Smith.” He looked to Ben. “It’s certainly been a
long time since you’ve been around, Ben.” Not waiting for an answer from him,
he turned his attention back to Josselyn. “What seems to be the problem
tonight?”
He
knew Ben by his first name. They looked to be about the same age, and in this
small town, it was likely they knew each other growing up. Although Officer
Smith seemed friendly enough, would he side with the hometown boy rather than
with the stranger girl?
“This
is my house. Morgan Parnell left it to me in his will. Now he...” She paused
and pointed at Ben. “He thinks it’s his house.”
“I
have a will, too,” Ben loudly interrupted. “And mine is legitimate!”
His
deep voice vibrated through her, causing her head to ache. Flustered, she pulled
an envelope from her handbag. Morgan’s attorney gave to her a copy of the will
a few days earlier. She handed it to Officer Smith. To her dismay, Ben also
produced a document from a briefcase.
This is very
bad.
She
hoped Ben had been bluffing.
Book Review:
Well
after reading the excerpt and synopsis, I expected a typical romance
novel. Guy and girl meet, have problem,
dislike each other, are forced together due to unforeseen circumstances, fall
in love, and live happily ever after. Blah. So I was pleasantly surprised to
see that while the story did follow the romance genera, the story was well
thought out and the hero and heroine both sacrificed something for the other
leading them both to realize that love with the other person’s happiness being
most important is the only true happiness.
Yes,
it’s a romance and they all follow a certain plot plan. That’s what makes them romance novels, and
that’s why we love them. So yeah, I
could have done without the whole “I’m damaged goods and don’t want to tell you
why. But eventually I will and we will
grow closer because of it and come to realize we are meant for each
other.” That was my only major issue
with the book. The overall message was
that we all have issues, but it’s okay and it helps make us the people we are
today.
Well
written, charming. I give is 4 out of 5
clouds.

Excerpt:
Olivia closed her eyes,
calling up her animal sensitivity ability, while shoving down her own panic.
After years of psychically working with animals, she knew they sensed panic and
fear. Her breathing needed regulating.
Olivia relaxed as best
she could and opened her mind. She sensed the wolf; masculine. He came across
with an urgent need to protect, more like helping her feel safe. Another howl,
with a deep and sinister timbre, shattered her concentration. A stab of
electricity zipped through her, pumping adrenaline and tightening every muscle.
This howl came from farther inside the forest than the first one. She sensed
aggression in the wolves within the forest, ready for battle. Her heart drummed
against her ribs in anticipation of an answering call, and she couldn’t stop
the tremors running rampant in her belly.
Instead she saw the
lights go out through her closed eyelids. She opened her eyes and saw nothing
but blackness.
Nine o’clock on a September evening, what did she expect? Damn power company! Hopefully Lacey sat in the Jacuzzi and wouldn’t
come running out.
She lay listening for
any sound. Her own breath, the loudest panting she’d ever heard, came in at a
close second to her heart banging against the walls of her chest. Slowly, she
sat up. The back of her head throbbed, her spine hurt, and the front of her
body ached, especially her breasts. She bent her legs to stand and in that same
moment a jet of hot mist coated her face.
Wolf breath.
Olivia froze, tamping
down the run-for-your-life urge. Her mind reached toward the beast beside her,
searching his energy markers, his emotions, urges. She read him as curious, stimulated.
Maybe a misread of…sexually stimulated? She sat back on her haunches, figuring
if she stretched at least four feet of her five-foot ten frame, maybe she’d
appear larger. His breath assailed her from above, she remained squatted.
Damn, this thing is huge!
He sniffed the top of
her head, down by her ear, licked the length of her neck and up the side of her
face. Another howl close by, echoing near the tree-line, got the wolf’s
attention. He raised his head from her and shoved her body back with his own.
She went down on her butt, folding her legs sideways. Fur from his backside
pressed into the front of her, including her face. Olivia turned her head away
and took a breath. A shiver began in her belly and inched through her arms,
legs, and up her neck. She sensed his urgency, he must move and his need…again,
to keep her safe and again something else, another misread?
He moved back, his head
next to hers. A growl vibrated, harsh and deep, beside her ear. Olivia jumped
when he yipped instead of howled. He circled her, stopping behind her. A sudden
scratch of claws and pebbles from rain washout near the barn pelted her. Air
swirled around her as the wolf leaped over her head in the direction of the
woods.
Olivia’s breath whooshed
out like a balloon being released. Tears welled and trickled down her face. The
wolf’s size was about as abnormal as it got. She’d never heard of any wolf
being that large. She’d done plenty of research on the species, brushing up for
the wolf pup she rehabilitated and released back into the wild years ago when
Ray and she first opened the refuge, before they owned the preserve property.
Olivia pushed herself up
onto wobbly legs, her stomach lurched, and before she could blink, vomit
spewed. She retched hard, falling onto her hands and knees, weak and crying,
something she hadn’t done since Ray’s funeral. As if on cue, all the lights
popped on, illuminating her shadow against the barn wall.
Oh, that’s lovely. Damn power company.
A howl, and then another
and another, echoed from different locations in the forest. Her forest, her
wildlife preserve, not a place for a beast like her visitor, and most
definitely not a place for the aggressive lot in the forest. She swiped her
face with the bottom of her shirt and looked toward the woods.
About thirty yards away
in the mowed meadow, her wolf circled with another, close-in-size, milky-eyed
wolf with a deformed face, both spot-lighted in the yard light. They flashed
razor sharp teeth and glowing eyes, with the exception of the one’s coated eye.
Their vicious growls and snapping jaws filled the air. Olivia found her tranq
gun on the ground and grabbed it. By the time she turned for a shot, she saw
the tail end of both wolves leaping into the woods, her wolf chasing the other.
Olivia leaned against
the barn, adjusting her position in accordance with her pain. She thought of
the curious readings she sensed from her wolf, not sure of their meaning. She
never questioned first impressions from readings anymore. Years of experiences proved
first intuitive readings rang as authentic truth in almost every case.
She closed her eyes and
pictured her wolf looking at her for the first time, the way his head snapped
in her direction and how their gazes met and connected. She touched her neck,
sliding fingertips up her cheek where his tongue touched her skin.
Her breath caught, heart raced, and her
eyes opened wide. She laughed out loud, maybe in relief, maybe in a small fit
of hysteria, or maybe because she consider that wolf as “her” wolf. Her
“stimulation” readings from him threw her off, knowing it wasn’t a possibility.

Book
Review:
Olivia endures a thirty-four year
passionless marriage, discovering her dead husband’s philandering history at
his funeral. She devotes her energy and life-long sensitivity with animals to
her wildlife refuge and preserve.
Chance, a Lycan alpha and leader of the
Lycan International Investigation Agency (LIIA) throws himself into his investigations.
He chooses to neglect his duty of finding a primal-mate after watching his
father become an empty shell over the loss of his.
A murderous rogue pack draws Chance onto
Olivia’s wildlife preserve, sending Olivia’s animal sensitivities into overdrive.
Chance and Olivia discover a sizzling force driving them together.
Will they succumb to its enticing tether,
or fight to resume their loveless lives apart?
Okay, so not the kind of book I usually review, but
va-va-va-voom. Definitely a keeper. This is a book for grown-ups only. Hot, Hot,
and yummy.
Okay, so maybe my naughty little secret is I like my romance
with a little heat or erotic moments thrown in.
This is definitely the book for that.
Not only is it a well written story (any yes, we like our erotica with a
“real” story not just heat), it has all the sizzle guaranteed to make my hubby
smile later.
This is a great read because of the story. The heat is a bonus perk. The story is about two strong alphas, one
male and one female, fighting for the land and to save what they love. So they clash and sizzle and clash some more,
but in the end they find that fighting is more fun when you work together for
what you want.
Unfortunately all the questions were not answered and boy do
I have some questions left over. Can’t
wait to see how they are resolved. This
is absolutely 4 of 5 clouds.
Welcome to the Author of Rae of Hope: W. J. May
Rae’s Story
I’ve often been asked by kids, adults and
other writers (who sometimes don’t quite fall into the kid category or the
adult one either J
) So, while visiting Mindy’s blog today,
I figured I’d share the story – from start to finish.
Sit back, unbutton your suit jacket and
grab yourself a snack and cup of coffee (better make it a small one, my story’s
not that long!)
I wrote as a kid (sadly, I figured I’d make
a wonderful romance, harlequin writer – which, coming from a small Christian
School I should have realized I’d never make the cut J ) However, writing dreams
got pushed aside for Olympic dreams when I began high jumping in tenth grade
and began representing Canada. Well, I never quite made the Olympics (made
World Championships, won Olympic Trials, but never quite made that extra 2cm
required by Canada
to make the standard).
My Dad passed away in 2008 from a strong,
six year batter with cancer. During one
of our last conversations we had, he encouraged me to chase after my
dreams. So, that Christmas (2 mths
later) I began writing again. I wrote a book called Riding Hood (which is
actually being edited with my agent and going out to publishers in the near
future – it’s now titled Seventh Mark).
Rae of Hope, the first book in the Chronicles of Kerrigan came along 2
months later, and ironically, 2 mths later it was finished.
I decided that if I ever wanted my kids to
read my work, I needed to fine tune it so they wouldn’t make fun of me. My kids are 6,5 and 21mths – I figured I had
plenty of time before they start reading a YA book. Anyways, I joined a critique group (www.critiquecircle.com – which I
highly recommend to any writer) and learned loads, met great friends
(especially the Golden Girls – who are not old, but are 5 star worthy) and
learned valuable information. On CC I
was encouraged to look for an agent to represent my work.
I didn’t believe that any of my writing was
publishing worthy but got curious. I
sent Rae of Hope out to five agents and within the week, all five requested the
entire MS. I didn’t realize that in
itself was a big feat – I assumed that was normal. Well, within two months, I had two agents
interested in representing Rae. I did
some homework (not quite sure what I needed to do, but I did ask a lot of
questions). I signed on with Dawn Dowdle from BlueRidge Literary Agency. She was interested in representing Rae of
Hope, and also Riding Hood/Seventh Mark.
Learning about edits, about re-reading and
revising (something I had ALWAYS hated to do as a kid) became something fun J Crazy ‘eh? I had no idea
what track changes were or how to do anything about them when I got my first MS
back. The red lines and comments made me
think I had to rewrite the ENTIRE ms over again! Ha ha – Dawn patiently
explained what needed to be done.
The time came to start publishing rounds
for Rae of Hope. A large number of
houses were interested and it was exciting to get requests, along with
responses of no’s – as a lot of editors gave suggestions what they felt the
story needed. I followed their advice
and I kept writing and learning all the while.
Chicken House – a UK
publisher – showed strong interest and we got fantastic feedback on what they
would like us to do. I rewrote and made
the story stronger. In the meantime (it
took me quite a while as three kids and a business kept me busy J ), CH found a similar story that they were interested in, or they
simply weren’t interested in it anymore.
No matter what the excuse, I learned more valuable information and was
extremely grateful for it.
kNight Romance Publishing contacted Dawn
between Christmas and New Years to say that they were interested in Rae and her
series. So, on January first of 2011, I
signed my first official publishing contract.
(yeah me!)
Mitchell Morris Publishing became on
imprint (or KRP became an imprint) – I’m not 100% sure how to say that one
correctly and Rae of Hope went from a single book to a four book contract.
More edits, more learning and now I began
to be able to share my opinions and understanding of the story and the edits
better – and Rae of Hope hit e-book format in August of 2011, the paperback
released the end of November. It was
original a POD, but is now going to traditional publishing, along with the next
book, Dark Nebula, coming out this fall/winter.
I sit here giggling over the fact that I am
able to hold my story in my hands. It’s
surreal. Amazing. Exhausting. Confusing. Fun. Inspiring.
… The best part – I know my Dad would be as
proud of my writing career as he was of my high jump career. And the better
part? I know he’s prouder of my three kids than anything else J So am I.
Thanks for letting me stop by Mindy and
share my story. I really appreciate it!
