Excerpt:

From A Love Story:

"Z'thandra," he intoned solemnly. "This council has no choice but to find you guilty of recklessly endangering one of the village and causing him to fall into a pit and break his arm. It is our judgment you receive five stones. May Phrake have mercy on you and prompt your heart to sincere repentance for your deeds."

Z'thandra heard Ulda and Eerna both gasp at the severity of her punishment, but the sounds came as to her as though from a long way away. Her knees went weak and her entire body began to tremble. She reached out blindly for something to hold herself up with and sagged thankfully against Ulda as the woman thrust herself under Z'thandra's arm.

"You can't be serious?" Ulda exclaimed pointing a scaly green finger at the councilors. "Five stones? Criminals, real criminals, get less than that."

Five stones. Z'thandra didn't hear the council's response, or Ulda's if she made one. She was lost in her thoughts. Five stones. She'd seen it done before, once. After that one time, the punishment was so brutal she'd made whatever excuse she could to never attend a stoning again.

Five stones.

At dusk, right before the magic moment when the last ray of the day's sunlight slipped into memory she would be brought, her hands bound behind her, to the sacred clearing. There she would be made to kneel, in the center of a circle comprised of all the members of the village who were able-bodied enough to make the short downhill trek. All those who wanted to be included in the draw to be tossers would throw their mark into the high councilor's hat and he would draw out the allotted number – in her case, five. The tossers would have a few short moments to pick their stones from those scattered around the clearing and then, in the instant the sun slipped below the horizon, pulling its last tendrils of light down with it, they would throw them.

People, reptar, were occasionally stoned to death, but with a sentence of five stones the tossers would not chose rocks they thought would cause that – they would aim to hurt, not to kill. Those people who'd been stoned in the past were easy to recognize around the village, they were invariably scarred, disfigured and broken. Their hearts, their spirits and their bodies.

Five stones.

From Lost and Found:

Long after her slow, even breathing told him Colby slept, Xavier sat, gazing silently into the flames but not really seeing them. The fire crackled and danced across the logs, causing the shadows of everything, from Colby to the boulders that peppered the floor, to move and twist at its whim. All save one.

His own shadow stood fast, resisting the shifting light. Often when he moved to watch his slumbering companion, it hesitated before following suit. After some time his shadow stood and began to pace the small cave, though he himself remained seated by the fire.

"They're out there ye know," the shadow hissed.

Xavier let his head fall into his hands and sighed. "I know.  I hadn't noticed earlier, but the silence betrays them. No insects chirp and no night birds call.  I know they're there."

"She don't," the shadow stated flatly, jerking its head in Colby's direction.

"I know."

"I told ye ta kill the guard.  Least it woulda given ya a head start ‘fore they knew ye were missin'."

"I'm not a murderer."

"Bah, ye don't know what ye is," the shadow mocked, waving his tentacles derisively.

The shadow's dry laughter sounded like a desiccated corn husk being tugged off the cob. It sent shivers down Xavier's spine. He gritted his teeth and flexed the muscles of his tentacles, trying to blot out the sound and looked back into the flames, thinking. Even his tentacles stopped swaying and rested peacefully at his side.

The shadow continued to pace. Its tentacles flailed violently around it, and occasionally one pounded angrily into the palm of its hand.

"They're jus' waitin' till their backup gets here."

"That's what I thought too. You suppose they'll attack at dawn?"

"I s'pose it depends on how long they bin waitin'."

"I don't think they were there when I woke up, but I don't know. They could have been there the whole time I slept, just waiting for a sign that Colby wasn't alone."

"If they've 'eard ye talkin' I 'spect they know she's not alone an' they won't waste time."

"Yeah, I expect they do." Xavier sighed. Standing slowly, he moved closer to the mouth of the cave and peered out. The sky hadn't begun to lighten yet, but the stars had grown faint.

"Kill 'em," his shadow whispered, but Xavier shook his head.

"I'm not a murderer."

The shadow threw up its arms and tentacles, in exasperation. "Fine, be a martyr, but don't ferget the main thing 'bout martyrs."

"What's that?" Xavier whispered.

"They're all dead."

From Sister Margaret:

Bayne could be a bit of a barbarian at times; however, he owned the most unbelievable sword you ever saw and wielded it with an unparalleled skill. I knew where to find him; he was as constant as the sun, that one.

I opened the door to Llewellyn’s whorehouse and took a quick look around the tap room. Haven was, perhaps, the only city in existence where most anyone could be welcome. Only here could you see elves drinking with dwarves, or reptars drinking with humans. Even so, Bayne was never difficult to spot; even here, he stood out.

He had white hair—not blond like what you might see on a pure human, but as white as bone—and his eyes were an icy blue that made women go weak in the knees. Though he wasn’t beefy, I’d seen him heft full-grown men over his head and through windows without breaking a sweat. Rumor said his father was an incubus; if true, that would account for his incredible strength. Then again, how do you ask a man if he’s half demon? Walk up and say, "Hey buddy, you got horns under that creepy colored hair?" Not a good idea, unless you worship the Goddess of Pain. I never did find out how true the rumors were, but it didn’t matter: he could swing a sword like no one you’d ever seen, and he worked for cheap if you told him it was for a good cause. Yes, Bayne was the man I needed at my side for this job.

He was currently sitting up on a mound of pillows with a tankard in his hand and a gaggle of giggling whores spread out around his feet like a harem. I didn’t have time to admire the view; it was almost midnight, and I intended to strike at dawn.

"Bayne, you up for a job?" My voice cut through the inane chatter of the girls at his feet like a lightning bolt through a tree. He caught my eye and nodded, and I took a seat at the bar and waited for him to disentangle himself from his fan club. After stepping over the girls scattered around him, he swaggered over to me and plopped himself down on the stool at my side.

Review:

Intriguing mix of stories.  I loved the mythological ideology behind the stories.  When I was teaching one of my assignments was for my students to create their own world.  It had to include the inhabitants, culture, religions, etc., everything that you would expect in a world and then to write myths or folklore for that culture.  These stories remind me of that assignment.  I would love to see the world that gave rise to these stories.

I think my favorite was the first story because it was so self-sacrificing and loving.  You have to read it to find out how because if I told you it would give away the best parts of the story.

I give these stories 4 out of 5 clouds..

Feel the Burn: Book Three

The battle to save Gar'nyse is upon them and already the costs are insurmountable.

With no other option but to knowingly sail into a trap, the girls, the Griffon Guard, and the gathered forces set forth to reach the castle and destroy Jenviet. However the loss of Alek means the task sits fully on the four girls' shoulders and with only one of them at their full Elemental abilities, the risk of death, or worse—failure—is high. Now with nothing to lose, Catherine refuses to link with the other girls, hoping that she alone will be able to take Jenviet. But the malevolent Sorceress of Vo'Arum has other plans...

The Arrival:  Book One

Cat, Kassie, Sian and Loi are anything but damsels in distress. Fed up with a lack of decent male specimens they cast a love spell in the hopes of finding their soul-mates. And inadvertently land themselves on another planet.

Oops…

The Arrival, follows the girls' adventures as they stumble through a foreign and often hostile world where humans are NOT at the top of the food chain. Friendships are forged and love teeters on the horizon while the threat of civil war looms thanks to the girls' very unexpected 'gifts'. Will the girls master these gifts in time to survive a war in which, not only are they the ultimate weapons, but also the ultimate prize...

Awakening:  Book Two

Be careful what you wish for...

A seemingly innocuous love spell caused Catherine, Sian, Laura, and Kassandra to cross worlds in search of their soul mates. But more than love drew them to Gar'nyse. Truths are revealed and lives forever altered after an attack at the castle. An age old feud between two archaic families threatens to tear the world they've arrived in apart. As the ultimate weapons in such a war the four girls are the only hope for peace.

But one of them lies unconscious from the attack, and the destiny that awaits her when she wakes will change everything.

About the Author:

Nicole MacDonald is a thirty something year old Kiwi who loves to read and moonlights as a novelist. From a young age she fantasized about being the heroine in the books and/or movies she watched and credits the series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ for really inspiring her. Writing only occurred to her a few years ago after reading an abysmal tale with silly useless females where upon she decided to write a tale solely for herself where the girls got to kick butt without the usual sob story—betrayed/abused/abandoned etc. That little tale eventuated into the BirthRight Trilogy.

Nicole’s current daydream is that Joss Whedon (aka the genius of film) will discover the BirthRight Trilogy and demand the film rights to it. Until then, she’s working on several other writing projects and aiming to explore the world with her partner.

Excerpt:

Feel the Burn – Excerpt
I slowed, stopping when I sighted Loi. She stood in the middle of a large cave, larger than the previous one we’d stayed in, and tiny lighted things fluttered around her.

‘Loi, what are those?’ I called in a quiet voice, not wanting to disturb them. Leynorah squealed and she and her mother leaped off my shoulders, flying straight for Loi and the lights. My jaw dropped when the two fae tackled one of the glowing things to the cave floor, gobbling it down and then lifted their heads to utter sharp whistles. Poor Loi looked horrified when answering whistles echoed from further down the corridor and more Halenine fae came whooping through, flashing past my head into the cave.

In a short matter of time the Halenine fae devoured the glowing things, buzzing excitedly around Loi, congratulating her on the find, oblivious to her appalled expression while she stared at the glowing remnants scattered about the floor. Those behind me pushed past into the cave, looking around, and the Cavalry and General guard soldiers started to set the camp up. It felt strange to realize that the whole day had gone, the lack of light messing with my body clock. Loi stared at the glowing remains of the fluttery things and I made my way to her.

‘Errmmm…sorry about that.’

Leynorah sat perched on a rock, fiendishly waving some bits of glowing wings in either front hand, singing a little ditty of ‘Yummy! Yummy, yummy, YUMMY!’

Loi sighed. ‘S’okay. Guess they have to eat.’

Review

So book 2 ended with the most horrible thing you can imagine happening and yet book 3 gets so much worse.  I cried off and on through the whole book, both sad and happy tears.  The loss of one of their members just strengthens the resolve of those remaining to kill the witch, which is good because they will need all that resolve to get through the battle/slaughter/war.  No one thinks they will return from this war.  In fact one or two of them plan to not return because the thought of living alone is too awful to comprehend.

And then just when you think you know what is going to happen, wham you are hit by a fly ball out of left field.  Everything you thought you knew as fact, not true.  Dead, not dead.  Friend, not friend.  Living, not living… or are they.  So many fast changes in status right at the end I was torn between crying and laughing and crying happy tears.  Absolutely fabulous ending to a great series.

I give this book 5+ out of 5 clouds.  I highly recommend this book to all.  It has romance, action, fantasy, surprises, sorrow, joy, and angst at every turn.  I was captivated from book 1 and stayed up until 3 am to finish book 3 because I couldn’t wait to see what came next.  Get book 1 free and you will see what I mean.

“Sewing a Friendship” is an unusual, inspiring artistic conception/creation about empowering girls to overcome obstacles and use creativity to grow together.  Created by 10-year-old author/illustrator Natalie Tinti, “Sewing a Friendship” is a truly unique and life enhancing book.  Although the target audience might well be 7-10 years old girls, the positive messages about inclusion and imagination will also appeal to others from teens to adults.

Chapter 3
PINK SLEEPOVER
“SSSleeepooover…How fun!” the wind murmured as it flew around the Blossom’s house.
The girls were still jumping on Sokron’s bed.
“Yeah, we can practice solving math problems all night long!” Meeka exclaimed in a fast pace.
“You won’t mind me dancing, will ya?” Jonsy asked.
“I would love to stay for a sleepover, but you know my dad has a hundred of rules,” Nina sighed. She stopped jumping and sat down on the bed.
Sokron sat down next to Nina and smiled, “It will be okay.”
“Well, it’s four o’clock; let’s get ready for the sleepover!” Jonsy said as she jumped off the bed with Meeka.
Then Meeka said, “Let’s go to the park first and study blue caterpillars for my science sandwich.”
“And I could teach the blue caterpillars to do professional-pointy-toed belly dancing,” Jonsy giggled.
“I’ll get them to wear fluffy cherry-pink tutus!” Sokron said with excitement.
“Plus, I can play pop-goes-the-the-weasel with my guitar,…trumpet, … violin, … banjo, … and drums. If I had them,” Nina said as she daydreamed about her instruments.
“Let’s do it,” they all shouted. They happily ran out of Sokron’s room and down the street. They found themselves at an enormous park covered with blooming flowers. Just then, something caught their eyes. It was KIKI SHAVER.
Book Excerpt Sewing a Friendship 2 – The Magic in Us: The Power of Imagination
“Are you ready, Sokron?” Meeka asked Sokron as they all came back to Nina’s room from the kitchen.

“Mm-hm.” Sokron sat straight as she began. “Here we go….Once upon a time there was a little girl with a beautiful name, Sokoora. She lived in a town full of dwarfs like her, all of whom lived in a huge rainbow pumpkin under a hollow tree. One of her favorite rooms in the pumpkin was a design studio that she had created for all the local animals. Sokoora liked to make the animals feel beautiful and special, and she had a very dwarfish way of doing it."

"Every morning Sokoora would invite all the animals into her very fancylicious studio full of different flowery colors. Here she had many unique items she used for helping the animals experiment with their personal style, accessories like face paint, jewelry and butterfly bows. And of course there were lots of different mirrors and exotic hats."

"One morning, this artist Sokoora noticed a fire bird with beautiful purple eyes staring at her from the middle of the crowd of animals waiting to enter the rainbow pumpkin. Sokoora felt hypnotized by the bird’s eyes and could not move. ‘What a strange feeling I have…I feel like I'm melting….I can see stars dancing around, the moon like a disco ball, a gorgeous castle flying on a cloud, a big clock telling me it's a very special time in the evening, and all kinds of presents coming from all directions toward the cloud castle….

Oh, what a beautiful dream!’"

"‘Good job, Fliffery-birdy-bird,’ said the bird’s trainer, who Sokoora hadn't noticed before. ‘Let’s go. We have more messages to deliver.’"

"When Sokoora heard that, she immediately woke up from her unforgettable dream. ‘What just happened? Was that real?’ she questioned herself. ‘What could all this mean? Did I just receive a message? An invitation maybe!? To a royal ball perhaps? Aha…I got it! I got it! It’s a birthday party! Today! I better get prepared and ready,’ Sokoora happily yelled out loud as she jumped and clapped. Then she looked at the animals around her and asked, ‘Who wants to be my present for this girl’s birthday party?’"

"One little hand lifted over its owner's head. The creature had furry pink bunny ears, but it also had pink wings on its back."

"‘OK, great! The birthday girl will love you!’ Sokoora announced as she skippedy-hopped across the floor inside of her studio and boxed her cute little volunteer creature into a pinkalicious round box.

Then she announced, “Please come back tomorrow, my dearest friends,” and happily set out with her gift pet into the dreary, unfashionable wilderness."

"When Sokoora reached the forest, she saw that a giant purplish furry-fuzzy bird-dragon (one of her favorite birds to fly on), was waiting for her. When Sokoora came closer, the bird-dragon approached her and remarked, ‘I heard you are going to the birthday party. I don't fit in your studio, but if you give me a big bucket of black lipstick, I’ll let you ride me. Deal!?’"

"Sokoora thought; she knew how much this bird-dragon loved black lipstick, but she didn't have that much.

‘Hmmm, how about five buckets, but… tiny ones?’"

"‘Deal!!’ said the bird-dragon as it kneeled down to let the lipstick girl climb on his furry-fuzzy back."

Review:

Cute and clever books that charmingly teach children morals in such a manner that they are charmed by the story and do not realize they are learning good things along the way.

I give these books 4 out of 5 clouds.
