About the Author:

Lee Roland began her writing career in middle school when she wrote a short story for her brother. He turned the story in to his teacher as his own work.  To his amazement and terror, the teacher was so impressed that she read it aloud to the class—and asked him to write another one.

Lee notes that, other than motherhood, she’s never had an exciting job.  She might have dreamed of being a lawyer, nurse or police officer, but finding the right person to share her life with changed her plans.  Her only credentials for writing are a terrific imagination, life experience and the love of words in a good story.  She reads voraciously, but particularly loves Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance.
Lee lives in Florida and is a full-time writer.  She is a member of RWA National and the Florida based First Coast Romance Writers.

Before being published, Lee won many RWA Chapter contests and garnered a Golden Heart nomination in 2008 with her post apocalyptic novel, LILITH’S CHILD.
Lee is the author of the Earth Witches series published by NAL, beginning with VIPER MOON in 2011.

Excerpts:

The Earth Witches Series
Vicious Moon

Ex-soldier and Earth Witch Nyx Ianira is working as a PI in San Francisco when she sees the last thing she ever wanted to see: the Sisters of Justice, the mysterious Earth Witch police force.  Three Sisters, a Triad, is usually a squad of executioners.  This time, though, the Sisters mission is to capture and escort an unwilling Nyx back to Twitch Crossing, Georgia.  Nyx ran away from Twitch Crossing ten years ago to escape the stiff rules and duties of being a true witch. She wanted a life of her own. Now she’s being dragged back to her swampy hometown because another life is in danger. Her little sister is missing, and Nyx is the only one who can go to the Barrows section of Duivel, Missouri and track her down.  But the key to finding her may lie with the dark and tempting Etienne—a sinister criminal with a fearsome reputation, a ruthless attitude, and a total immunity to magic.

Nyx, like all earth witches, serves the Earth Mother.  The ancient female deity, maiden, mother, and crone, signifies the progression of life from cradle to the return to her heart in the grave.  The Earth Mother bestows power and her witches and they serve her all their lives.  It doesn’t take long for Nyx to realize that the Barrows is a special place in which the Mother takes great interest.

In direct opposition to the Earth Mother in the Barrows is the incredibly beautiful Aiak√≥s, often referred to as the demon. Nyx says of him:  I couldn’t stop staring.  No spell had ever caught me, but my first sight of him overwhelmed my senses.  It was his eyes that broke the enchantment.  He’d dropped his guard to study me and those perfect golden orbs turned black as a basement in hell.  Only an instant, but all the earth magic in me shrieked and broke free.  All the warnings I heard held true.  Something deadly, something evil approachd.

Excerpts – Vicious Moon

The Beginning
Disaster loomed like an earthquake-born tsunami.  The moment the woman climbed into my car, that watch your back feeling kicked me in the ass and I wanted to hunch my shoulders and duck.  I ignored it, as I had many times in the past. I based my decision on the often flawed theory that catastrophe wasn’t so bad if you saw it coming.

She’d stood waiting in front of a convenience store, right where I’d been told to pick her up.  She said her name was Mara, but she didn’t offer a surname and refused to make eye contact.

I’m Nyx Ianira. I’m a licensed private investigator in San Francisco. I’m twenty eight years old, a former soldier, armed guard, and an earth-witch with magical powers that unfortunately don’t include the ability to discern lies.  I stretched my legs, trying to ease the tension.  Waiting is something every PI gets used to, but this time I couldn’t relax.

At least I’d changed from my suit into more comfortable jeans and a T-shirt. I did wish this job was over with, though.  I had a date with the owner of a dive shop later.  He wants to give me lessons.  Actually, he wants to take me to a sunny beach in Mexico and talk me out of my bikini.  He’s not a deep, philosophical thinker but he likes what he sees.

I have gold-brown hair with lighter blonde streaks, nice perky breasts, and a tall slim body that curves in the right places.  There will be no great soul-mate meeting of the minds, but he’s attractive and it promises to be fun.  Foggy San Fran vs. Sunny Mexico.  I’m already packed.

Harold, my erratic and occasionally inebriated partner at Single-Eye Investigations had called last night and asked that I take a pro bono case for him.  I was to retrieve a child from a non-custodial father.  While I’m always happy to help a kid in danger, the agency has firm rules against that kind of high-risk intervention.  I helped write the rules when I became a partner in the firm.  Those situations are best handled by the appropriate official authorities, the kind with warrants, guns and badges.  Harold said he’d made an exception for this one because the father was an abusive, drug-dealing fiend. Apparently he feels I’m more qualified to face abusive, drug-dealing fiends than he is.  He’s right, of course, but that didn’t make it less dangerous or less a violation of the rules.

Nyx Meets Etienne
Herschel raised his head and growled.  Something dangerous approached.
I’d brought my backpack in with me, but extracting my gun or the knife I always carried there would be difficult.  That left only magic to deal with a threat.

A man stepped through the doorway.  He stood over six feet and had a rugged body, slim and lean, but at the same time well muscled.  Jet black hair curled slightly against his neck and around his ears, and his eyes…oh, those eyes…cold, dark and dangerous as black ice on a frozen highway.  He had copper-colored skin with sharply defined black tattoos from elbow to wrist.  Not pretty colored tattoos, but inked midnight curved like pieces of a puzzle.  His jeans fit that impressive body, as did the gun he wore openly in a shoulder holster over his T-shirt.  There are places in the world where that might be done, but this was Middle America.  Most everyone owned a gun of some sort—they usually kept it out of sight.  He obviously didn’t give a shit.
I’d met men like him before—powerful, dangerous.  They were usually either lovers or enemies.  The look on this one’s face said he didn’t have love on his mind.

Review:

I loved this book.  I’m not sure if I have read the first two books in the series, but they definitely on my TBR list now.  Such a fun mythology to read.  The originality and unique voice in these books makes them a new favorite.  I hope you will read them for yourself.

I give these books 4 out of 5 clouds.

Blurb :

Few residents in the small, secluded mountain town of Winston, Colorado, have kind words to say about Sean Coleman. He's a bully, a drunk, and a crime-show-addicted, armchair detective with an overactive imagination. After a night of poor judgment, Sean finds himself the sole witness to the unusual suicide of a mysterious stranger.

With the body whisked away in the chilling rapids of a raging river, no one believes Sean's account. Tormented over the doubts and mockery of the people of Winston, Sean embarks on a far-reaching crusade that takes him across the country in search of the dead man's identity and personal vindication. At the end, he hopes to find redemption and the truth-but sometimes the truth is better left unknown. There are times when the truth invites evil. There are times when the truth can get you killed.

"Some writers are thoughtful. Some have style. John Daly has both. When I read his work, it's time well spent." - Bernard Goldberg, New York Times bestselling author of 'Bias'.

About the Author:

A lifelong Coloradoan, John Daly graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in business administration and computer information systems. He spent the next fifteen years developing accounting software and Internet-based workflow collaboration solutions.

With a thirst for creative expression that went beyond the logic and absolutes of computer programming, John developed an interest in writing. His early work included newspaper editorials and film and television reviews for entertainment websites. He later became drawn toward more substantive commentary on world events. He currently writes political, cultural, and media analysis columns for the website of Bernard Goldberg, former CBSNews journalist and The New York Times bestselling author.

John felt compelled to take his writing to the next level after watching a television interview with former NFL football player, Tim Green. Inspired by Green's career transition from a professional athlete to an accomplished author, John found the motivation to begin work on his first novel, From a Dead Sleep.

From a Dead Sleep is the story of a profoundly flawed man who witnesses a tragic event that no one else believes, and that man's quest for the truth and redemption. The mystery novel unfolds in the dense mountain ranges of Colorado where John has spent much time camping, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors.

John lives in Greeley, Colorado, with his wife and two children.

Review:

Initially this book was somewhat difficult to follow as it jumps back and forth between two people who apparently have no connection, although later you see how they connect.  Additionally Sean is sort of the antithesis of a hero; he’s just not a likeable guy and nowhere is this more emphasized than in his disgust or ignoring of the disabled child who (for some strange reason) idolizes him.  However, you later see that while Sean is coarse and rough, he is, in a strange way, kind to the child.  He never is outwardly cruel anyway.  While Sean grows on you, he is a strange one.

The jumping around gives you everyone’s perspective (and they are generally told in bulk clumps which helps).  I didn’t like the book when I first started reading it, but before I was 1/3 of the way through I was totally hooked.  It is not a style of writing I generally would choose to read, but it was a fun  change.

The story is written like a cross between “The Sopranos” and an old black and white detective movie (but with much better dialogue).   I will definitely add this author to my keep in mind for my TBR list.

I give this book 3.5 out of 5 clouds.
