Excerpt:
“Eric introduced us to Michelle,
the phlebotomist. “What is a phlebotomist?” asked Haley. “A
phlebotomist is a person who specializes in drawing a patient’s blood for
testing,” said Michelle. Suddenly, Nathaniel got an interesting look on
his face and raised his hand. “Yessss,” said Michelle. “Is your job
sort of like being a vampire?” Nathaniel asked. The entire class
laughed and turned to look at Michelle. “No,” she chuckled.
“I learned about all of the
different areas that doctors could specialize in, for example, Dr Herrera was a
podiatrist, and he specialized in treating patients with feet problems.
Dr. Osborn was a neurologists; she specialized in helping patients with nervous
system disorders. We also met Dr. Chadwick, the hospital’s pharmacist;
she helped patients get the medicine that they needed in order to help them
feel better.”

Book Review:
When I first received this book for
review, prior to reading the recommended ages, I would have placed the age
range for the book at 1st or 2nd grade, putting much of
the wording above the level of the “average” reader for these age ranges. While my precocious children would have no problems
with the wording, your general child would struggle. However, I would say that for the age range
the book is perfec.t
This book is all about preparing
kids for hospital stay, or perhaps the long-term stay of a loved one. It is very thorough in explaining each job
and personnel that the child may run into during a hospital stay. I felt that the book was a bit dry; there
were small moments of humor. such as asking the lab technician is they were a vampire. However overall the book would provide good
information as long as you realize that the kids will be bored.
I would give this book 3 out of 5
clouds for enjoyability and 5 out of 5 clouds for information, resulting in an
overall rating of 4 out of 5 clouds.
