A Hunter's Angel
by Cera DuBois

Blurb :

The serial killer stalking Clayton, Pennsylvania, isn’t all that has Chief of Police Grace Wallace worried. For a year, she’s tried to forget Special Agent Ian McHenry and now he’s the expert the FBI sent to catch the killer. She can’t stay away from him, but something primal is telling her to run to save much more than just her heart.

Despite the strict code of ethics Ian vowed to follow as a vampire hunter, he craves Grace’s blood above all others. If he chooses to stay, Ian risks losing his chance at divine forgiveness.

But if he leaves Grace unprotected from the evil he’s hunted for over a century, he loses more than just his soul…

About the Author:

Cera duBois has a strong belief in never giving up on your dreams… Although Cera was unable to read due to dyslexia and a learning disability until she was in the fourth grade, she always had a story to tell. She wrote her first novel in eleventh grade when she had to keep a journal for her academic English class.

Since her life was far from exciting growing up as a farm girl in West Central Pennsylvania, she decided to rely on her imagination to give her something to write about. Over the course of the school year, she wrote a tangled romance set in the Deep South during the Civil War.

Becoming an author was her ultimate dream. Despite holding a BS in secondary social studies education from Penn State University, she currently works full-time as a medical secretary.

A mother of a teenage son and pre-teen daughter, she lives near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with her husband of nearly 20 years. If she isn’t sitting in a quiet corner with her laptop, warm days will find her in the English garden surrounding her house. Cera loves to read and is interested in history, romance, science fiction and the paranormal.

She also writes contemporary Westerns under her real name of Sara Walter Ellwood.

Excerpt:

“I’m in love with the man inside the vampire.”  Grace moved her hand to thread through his silky hair. When she rested the other over his heart, a soft sigh escaped his lips. Underneath her palm, the slow beat was barely noticeable.
His thumb grazed her cheekbone and slowly trailed down to the hollow of her throat. Her breathing quickened at the zinging anticipation as he caressed the pulse point where he’d claimed to have taken blood from her. He glanced at the spot with eyes as haunted as he sounded. “I’m not a man.”
                “But you were once.”
He met her gaze again. “Yes, once.”
His fingers lingered over her pulse. Her heart raced under his touch. She tilted her neck as if his touch awakened some base instinct to offer the sacrifice. “Do you still want my blood?”
Ian stepped away and locked his wide-eyed gaze onto hers. At last, he rasped, “No, I don’t want your blood. Oh, God, I still crave it. You have the sweetest I’ve ever had, but I will never hurt you again.”
She didn’t know what possessed her to do so, but she whispered, “You can take...some of it.”
He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he acidly said, “No, Grace. I can never taste your blood again. It would kill you.”
Fear of what she’d wanted him to do tumbled through her. She stepped away, and for a moment, she considered telling him to leave. How did she know any of this was real? She couldn’t imagine she’d ever freely offer a vampire her blood. Did she really believe him? He was sucking her into his insanity. But if this was true and he could make people do things against their will, maybe he could control her feelings.
“Maybe I should go?” Ian backed away another step and headed toward the counter where he’d left his dagger. He turned back to her with the sheath in his hand. Her heart shattered with the knowledge that, if he walked out the front door, she’d never see him again. “Goodbye, my sweet angel.”
His jagged murmur ripped at her soul as his eyes took on a blazing intensity and snared hers. She felt a pressure in her mind, and she knew what he intended to do. He wanted to erase her memories of him.
No!

Author Interview:
We are fortunate to have author Cera duBois with us today to answer some questions.  Thank you so much for visiting Books, Books, and More Books.

Dreamer2229(Drm):  I appreciate your taking the time to visit with us today.

Thanks for having me today!

Drm:  1.      What inspired this particular novel/book?

“You’d be surprised, Bella, at how often my kind are the source behind the horrors in your human news.” Edward from Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer, page 25. This line inspired the book and eventually the whole series.

Drm:  2.      What character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

Ian was my favorite to write. I enjoy writing tortured heroes and he is one of my favorites.

Drm:  3.      Which was your favorite scene to write?

I loved writing about Grace finding the Irish history book with Ian’s mortal picture in (it was painted in 1600), and the hilarity of when she tells her best friend and Lieutenant Ben Anders that Ian is a vampire.

Drm:  4.      What was the hardest thing about writing this story?

Honestly, this book was one of the easiest I’ve ever written. If anything was hard about writing it, it was working in the info that was important to the story that had originally come out in the scenes I had cut when I removed the villain’s POV.

Drm:  5.      What Are Your Writing Quirks & Must-Haves To Write?

I don’t really have any. Although I do enjoy having coffee or tea while I’m writing.  And when I’m in the mood, music.

Drm:  6.      What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I can write anywhere. I don’t have to be in the quiet or even not around other people to write. I get a lot done this way.

Drm:  7.      Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like?  If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?

I wish I could write full-time! I work as a medical secretary for the Army. My writing time/social media/blog reading/blog writing/critiquing/RWA duties are shoved in a 3 to 5 hour window in the evenings after work and on weekends and days I have of.  I’ve learned a long time ago to multitask, and I try hard not to procrastinate on anything.

Drm:  8.     As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I used to bug my older cousins, who were all ten to fifteen years older than me to play school. Of course, I wanted to be a teacher. The joke had been that my little brother, who was six years younger than me, was in school from the time he woke up to the time he went to bed when he was still little enough to be bossed around by me.

I became a secondary social studies teacher but couldn’t find a full-time job and actually discovered that I HATED IT!! If anyone wasn’t meant to be a teacher, it was probably me. I still do teach some. I’m the lead CPR instructor for my clinic.

I went back to school and eventually became a medical assistant. My long term goal then had been to become a nurse, but when I got pregnant before I graduated my training program with my son, who turns sixteen this fall, that plan never materialized.

Drm:  9.      When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I had to keep a daily journal in eleventh grade English. I had a pretty boring life as a farm girl and wasn’t into sports or had a boyfriend, so I asked if I could write a story. My teacher didn’t care what we wrote, as long as we wrote every day.  Over the course of the school year, I filled up three notebooks with this tangled romance based in the South during the Civil War. I received a 100% on the project every marking period and as much as extra credit he could give me.  He gave me the extra credit for the research on the Civil War that I included in the story. He also said that the story was very well thought out. I knew before the end of that book I wanted to be a writer someday.

Drm:  10.  Where do you find your Inspirations?

A news event, a song, a line in a book, as with A HUNTER’S ANGEL, or from something as unlikely as watching metamorphous of a butterfly when a caterpillar made its home on some parsley I had planted, can inspire me.

Drm:  11.  What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?

I read mostly paranormals and contemporary Westerns, not surprising since these are the two genres I write. But I do read a lot of other things, too. I’d have to say my favorite straight contemporary romance author is Rachel Gibson. Second would be Linda Lael Miller’s contemporary Westerns. Oh, and I recently became a fan of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. And I love Amanda Ashley’s paranormals. Outside of the romance genre, I love the Star Wars books—Timothy Zahn, Mike Stackpole, Aaron Allston and Matt Stover are probably my favorites. I love John Jakes in the historical genre.

Book Review:

A vampire hunter who is a vampire?  Now there’s an oxymoron for you.  And if that’s not odd enough his mate is human… a frail, short lived human.  But that isn’t the worst of his problems.

A former big city detective, she helped find a serial killer that thought he was a vampire and drank human blood.  After all the drama of the big city, with a broken heart, she returned home to care for her father when he was ill and now she’s the Chief of Police.  She was never going to see him again…. Until he walked in to her serial killer case and turned her life upside down.

This is a fun romance about two people who are perfect for each other, but fight it every step of the way.   Would you give up your love if you thought that you were bad for them?  I don’t know if I could.

I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds.

This product or book may have been distributed for review; this in no way affects my opinions or reviews.

  6. Great interview! I learned lots about you, Cera! Do you still like the Civil War period? Would you write an historical based on that period? Best of luck on A Hunter's Angel!

  7. Thanks for coming by, Jenna.... If the right plot bunnies (to use an old fan-fiction term) would sprout out of the dust bunnies clogging my head, I would. I'm seriously considering writing an honest to goodness Western (a prequel to my Colton Gambler's series), which would be set after the Civil War in Texas. And I actually started a story set during the Civil War in Maryland right before the Battle of Gettysburg. I started it last spring when I considered venturing into the inspirational area to appease my agent... But because it was an inspy my heart wasn't in it. I may consider finishing it, but making definitely not an inspy...
