When
Mindy invited me to write a guest post, she suggested the topic be “10 Things
Reader's Would Be Surprised To Know About You.”
My immediate thought was, Yikes, how do I keep from turning this into an
exercise in total narcissism? I’m not
sure I have an answer for that.
Should
I be frivolous? How about this? I don’t eat green Lifesavers. Hate ‘em.
I consistently pluck them out of the roll and throw them away. (What flavor is the green supposed to be,
anyway? Lime? Bile?)
Sorry Lifesavers. I love your
other flavors – cherry being my favorite – but I can’t stand the green. You should lose ‘em. It would save me some money.
Ok,
maybe that’s a tad too flippant.
Should
I be more solemn? Believe it or not, I
have never read anything by Tolstoy, Austen, Hugo or, drum roll please, Dickens. What, I hear you say, you’re an author and
you haven’t read all the classics? Well,
have you?
No. That’s way too confrontational. And it makes me look like a rube. (Did I say any of that out loud?)
So,
I think I should just be honest. I don’t
know that there are all that many things about me that readers would find
particularly interesting. But here’s the
undeniable reality: I love to
write. I mean, I love to write. I do it all
day as part of my law practice, and then I come home, and, for fun, I keep
writing. It used to be embarrassing when
people would ask me what I do in my spare time.
I’d hem, I’d haw. I really didn’t
think they’d believe me if I said I like to write.
Now
that I’ve published a couple of novels, though, it’s as if the world has opened
up. I can admit my little secret. It’s all very liberating.
I
think, unless it’s hurting others, people should do the things about which they
have a passion. I’ve found mine. I only hope those who read what I write get
half the enjoyment I get out of the writing.
