Peter Van Dooren’s wealth and prestige mean that his family wants for nothing – except a husband and a father.

When the president of a sinking tropical island in the south pacific calls on the world’s most ingenious entrepreneurs to help save his people, Van Dooren reckons his plan can save the island and its people’s way of life.

If it works, Van Dooren’s plan will not only make him richer, it could also change the very idea of nations and borders. After all, changing the world is what Peter really wants to accomplish.

The thing is, not all of the islanders share Van Dooren’s vision for their homeland. That won’t stop Peter from risking everything to prove that nature can be tamed. Playing God may cost Van Dooren his fortune and his own family.

While Peter plots a world away, his wife, son and daughter sink deeper into their own personal abyss of retail therapy, amateur pornography and Christian fundamentalism.

Everyone is adrift on the same tide of greed, lust and fear. This is the current that shapes the world. It always has; it always will.

Commended by judges of the prestigious, Victorian Premier's Literary Awards for an Unpublished Manuscript and finalist in the International Showcase Screenwriting Competition, 'The Current' is a novel about the difference between having a house and losing a home. The style of writing is literary (thoughtful but humorous), and will appeal to readers of Jonathan Franzen (particularly Freedom), Ian McEwan (particularly Solar) and Michel Houellebecq (particularly Platform). Stylistically, The Current offers readers a back and forth split storyline and portent of danger comparable to Paul Thomas Anderson's film, Magnolia (1999).

Praise for 'The Current':

Ironic and slyly, bleakly humorous. The Current is a story peopled by men and women of the Renaissance who jog and contemplate their plane food and visit websites and shopping malls, who seem both exhausted by and untiringly connected to their technologies. Gently vexing and hauntingly memorable.”- Clare Allan, Writers Victoria
"The Current has all the elements of a literary mainstream novel that demands the reader think about home, traditions, family, refugees and political and commercial intervention. This is a story of belonging, of finding your fit within family and your fit within the world.”–Amanda J. Spedding, Phoenix Editing

Excerpt for Books Books

The pontoon boat churned through the water, choppy waves banging hollow against its aluminum hull. The water was blue and clear, and the flat seabed was visible beneath the surface, interrupted by the occasional patch of coral. Peter felt the cool salt spray on his hands and face and he breathed in deeply.

The boat rounded the island’s rough, pebbled shoreline.

President Koyl’s diplomatic efforts to contain the rising sea level had not been entirely in vain. A few small-scale projects stood as evidence of the international community’s involvement on L’Eden Sur Mer.

Small, individual sea walls had been built to protect homes along the beach. The walls had gone up, separating neighbors into little concrete pens along the foreshore.

But the walls hadn’t been strong enough. One by one, the sea had breached them and concrete slabs now littered the beach like an aborted game of giant dominoes.

Peter watched smoke rise from behind the little houses, the only sign that anyone was home.

Past a shallow reef system the wind picked up suddenly. The sea was darker here. It looked bluer, deeper, and colder. The motor revved higher but they moved no faster through the water. They must be fighting the same currents that droopy-faced Lieutenant Ball had noted in his logbook.

Peter squinted at a silhouette in the distance. Not a mountain. Not even a hill. It was more of a mound. Curly white waves broke against its steep shore.

The motor quieted and the boat circled the little island. Shards of broken glass and twisted metal from a collection of crumbling buildings glinted in the sun.

“This is the Peak,” said Koyl gravely. “People used to be able to walk to the mainland from here.”

The shoreline of L’Eden Sur Mer was only a few yards away.

“Six years ago,” said Koyl, “we used a giant machine, a dredger, to bring sand and rock from the bottom of the sea and put it on the surface. This was already the highland, you see. So we made it higher.” Koyl’s turned to the sandy, rocky formation outside the boat. His audience did the same. “Locals call it the Peak,” he added quietly.

A dredger. Cunning, thought Peter. All of this sand, these rocks and boulders had just been lying, useless, on the seabed. For how long? Centuries? Millennia? Now they’d been brought to the surface to do something useful.

The flood-resistant island within the island had been the brainchild of the Öersk Development Corporation, a Danish company that had been contracted by the government of L’Eden Sur Mer to build and settle the new housing project. It was to be Öersk’s expansion project and serve as an alternative model for international development.

“It was a good idea,” said Koyl. “But it didn’t work.”

Some three hundred families had been persuaded to relocate to the Peak, lured by the promise of new, two-bedroom apartments, complete with air conditioning, double glazing and European appliances.

The boat circled the Peak a second time. A bent and rusting metal sign said something aspirational. The writing was barely legible: new, proud, construction, home. Only the top of the government crest remained to be eaten by the rust. Whatever the sign said was unimportant now. The experiment had failed. The relocation had muddled the islanders’ traditional social ties, which had long been based on their regional identity and their connection to ancestral land holdings. On the Peak, people from the east of the island had been lumped in with those from the west and it wasn’t long before in-fighting between families over meaningless domestic issues assumed religious proportions.

A series of arson attacks within the development had sparked an exodus, led by people with young children who felt they had too much to lose by remaining at the Peak. A band of youths had briefly taken over the burnt-out buildings but had been ‘moved on’.

The apartments lay vacant and served as giant nesting boxes for the Pacific gulls that squawked as the boat passed by. Fittings and fixtures had been torn out. Mounds of sand had blown in through shattered glass patio doors. The wind whistled around the sharp and broken edges of the Peak.

No one spoke.

“The Peak has become a cursed place,” said Koyl. “Most people dare not come here at all. Some have started to speak of it as an omen about the coming end of time.”

Review:

Interesting concept for a novel that makes you think about the world and social issues on a more personal level.  Some parts of the book are amazing and well thought out.  However it is somewhat disconnected with odd storylines sticking out like loose threads.  I am glad I read it but still find myself with many unanswered questions and loose ends.

I give this story 3.5 out of 5 clouds for the amazing imagery and writing.

EXERPT

They’re after the blades, I realized to myself, searching for where Aeisha once was. I looked down at her paired blade in my hand, summoning the energy it possessed. I could sense her partnered blade — it was not that far from here. Was the girl a distraction?

As if hearing my annoyance, Ashley ran over to me as the Starkorfs all began to flee behind the small girl that took Paul’s knife, which held no significant power to it, why run away with it? Plus, they had Aeisha’s other blade.

“They’re here for the Immortal Blades. Chase them and find that girl, find out who sent them,” I shouted.

I felt Aeisha’s pulse once more from whoever held it and ran with my blade. The girl that had taken Paul’s knife must have been a distraction. I ran into the direction where Aeisha called to me. It did not take me long to run past only eight houses until I found the four Starkorfs that ran from me. The one in front was holding Aeisha.

They quickly turned to face me as another arrow shot for me, this time breaking through my Shield and into my shoulder. I winced at it, holding my hand firmly to the injury. How did it get through my Shield? I felt the pulse of Tyran and then the shiver of Misfeata coming to the surface. But how is Tyran close, does that mean Nathanial is behind this ambush and close by? Have they been following us this whole time or is Lucas working with him, telling him of our location?

“Get out!” I screamed ripping at the arrow and tearing it from my shoulder. Pain stirred in my wound more than usual. What does this mean? Is Nathanial absent, but still leading this ambush?

I projected my Shield once again as orange ripples swirled around me, only to be broken by another arrow that shot into my leg. I screamed once more in anger as I felt my face twist, trying to compose Misfeata. Where are these arrows coming from and how are they penetrating my Shield?

Anger swelled within me as I faced the Starkorfs, running for them.

“Give me Aeisha!” I raged, angered by my attackers, annoyed they thought they could steal Aeisha from me successfully.

I cut the first Starkorf’s stomach quickly, catching it as it fell forward and using its body as a barrier, noticing another arrow coming for me. The arrow pierced into the Starkorf’s body as I dropped it, leaping for the other. I caught its wrist and swung him in front of me as another arrow shot for me. Another Starkorf’s burned face caught the corner of my eye as it tried to use Aeisha against me, trying to strike me down with her.

I crouched quickly, using the Starkorf I had hold of as the shield to my back. I elbowed the oncoming attacker in the stomach and quickly slashed Aeisha across his knees. He staggered and dropped as I pierced his leg, catching Aeisha’s partnered blade as his grotesque figure screamed on the ground.

I jumped over a fence and hid against the side of a house, firming my back to the wall to hide from the archer. I searched for the archer, noticing the other Starkorf who now ran in the opposite direction, away from me. An arrow hit her back and she dropped to the ground as another caved into the side of her head. The archer is killing their own kind.

Perhaps the archer was no ally of the Starkorfs either? Or maybe because they hadn’t killed me or stolen Aeisha the archer was displeased. I stared for a little longer, hearing a sob behind me. I turned with blades in hand ready to confront my attacker, only to find a small child in front of me with tears running down her face.

My eyes widened. Is it human? Or is it a trick? I briefly searched behind: a trampoline, a few toys on the ground, a vegetable garden at the back. No hiding places for any others to attack from. I stared back into the child’s face as emptiness filled it and shock echoed through such innocent eyes. There is no evil in this girl. This is only a mere human child. I looked away in disbelief. She would have seen everything. The reality of this other world made me nostalgic.  I have taken the innocence of this girl away, opening such a horrific nightmare in front of her.

I will now be the memory of her greatest fear.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

 Kia Carrington-Russell

About author:
Kia Carrington-Russell is a young author working on her first series: “The Three Immortal Blades”. Kia began writing at the age of fifteen in high school- finding that all her warped and strange dreams were giving her a fantastic new world- and since then she has never looked back.
Kia Carrington-Russell
Kia was born in a small town in Australia, moving around a lot at a young age until finding a stable town where she finished her schooling. Kia found herself enjoying and expressing herself through poetry, short stories and writing, photography, painting and drawing. All these mediums help Kia express the different world that she is so fond of.
In ‘Senior Art’ Kia focused on feminism and female empowerment; exposing through her work issues and concerns that many people would rather just “sweep under the rug”.
In one art installation, Kia made a bed out of Pokémon cards- the concept being that when she slept a new world would come to life and it was the only one she saw and constantly lived in.
Kia now focuses on her photography, writing and self-help blogs on her website: ‘Precious Living’.
Kia is now keenly working on “The Three Immortal Blades” series knowing that this book has to be shared with the world and that is what she aims to do now.
Kia writes in her Australian home, trying to focus at times on simply what is running through her head, as her cats either terrorize her legs as scratching posts or her puppy barks in her ear for play-time. And as she continues her series, they grow with her book.
Kia is strongly supported by her friends and family and thanks them dearly for being with her along the bumpy road and nothing would please her more than having your support as well.

Review:

The story is about an interesting world created by this author where magic is prevelant and good fights against evil.  There is an akward love triangle of sorts that complicates things.  I found it distracting, but it did give a  clarity to the protagonists internal dilemma about her two sides.

I am still uncertain if I like this story, but I look forward to reading more by this author as I find them intriguing and challenging.

I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds as it is well written and challenges me in a positive way.

Book Review of The Shadow Academy

Blurb:

After the Plague Wars they waited for the invasion. And as the new Dark Age dawns... there is one who can bring light.

In a world little more than a whisper away from ours, the islands of Grand Brittannia lie just off the shores of the deeply forested content of Evropa, the dark and forbidding realm of legends scarcely remembered.

Grand Brittannia, itself almost completely a place of deep forest and mystery, has at its heart the crumbling, anachronistic administrative city of Londonborough. From here the Central Authority wields power over the Islands and exercises its control rigidly and clinically. Since the rigours of the Plague Wars, some hundred years in the past, when almost the entire population of the world was wiped out and the gradual decline of civilization began, industry and technology have atrophied, their development now strictly vetted by the Authority.

Out on the far-flung coasts, a network of ancient fortress ports wait in readiness for an invasion that some say will never come, their ancient, declining Academies committed to the rigours of training the defenders of the Islands. These Academies are subjected to regular inspections by Enforcers from Londonborough, and their native inhabitants are constantly being swelled by the young military graduates from the Authority's own Military Academies in the center. Into a cauldron of intrigue and subterfuge that is the town and Academy of Petra comes Chad Mundy, the Authority's replacement for Drew Vasillius, a veteran teacher who has committed suicide. At least, that is what he's been told...

Author Information:

Author - Science Fiction & Fantasy. Adrian Christopher Synnot Cole was born in Devonport, Plymouth (UK) on 22nd July 1949, son of Frederick and Ruth Cole. He can trace his father’s line back to 1642 in the South West.

His father spent most of his working life in the Army (R.E.M.E.) and was stationed in Malaya for 3 years in the early 1950s. On returning to the UK, Adrian lived in various areas of the country – Yorkshire, Dorset, Cornwall, Birmingham – before returning to his Devonian roots and setting up home in Bideford, North Devon in 1976. He married Judith Rose Nixon and has subsequently had 2 children, Samuel and Katia.

Adrian worked as a librarian and a local government officer before taking up a post as Business Manager at Bideford College, a large secondary school, where he worked for some 20 years before his retirement in 2011.
Apart from a lifelong passionate interest in all things related to fantasy, horror and science fiction, collecting books, comics and magazines, Adrian’s main interests are swimming at the nearby beach (Westward Ho! Is one of the finest surfing bays in the country) cycling along local rural routes and watching movies. Many of his stories utilise the Devon and South Western landscape.

He is a devout fan of his home town football (soccer) club, Plymouth Argyle and often takes a bus ride down to the city, 60 miles away across the beautiful spine of the county, to watch them play – and occasionally win! Adrian is one of the few people in the universe who doesn’t drive – he is quite happy with coaches, trains and planes.

He wrote his first “novel” at the tender age of 10 – a pastiche of BLACK BEAUTY, which he stopped reading in order to write (and illustrate) his own version. Sadly this gem is long lost, but the drive to write more remained very much alive and Adrian worked on his first serious attempt at getting published when he was 19. This was a fantasy “epic” inspired by LOTR, DUNE and various ERB works – entitled The Barbarians, it eventually saw print as THE DREAM LORDS trilogy (see section on novels).

Since then he has gone on to write many novels, the latest of which, THE SHADOW ACADEMY from Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing, Canada ( 2014) is the 25th he has had published. He has also written numerous short stories, his latest collection being NICK NIGHTMARE INVESTIGATES from Alchemy Press (2014). He has also performed some of his more light-hearted material at Conventions.

His work has varied through science fiction, fantasy, sword & sorcery and horror and he has had short stories reprinted inThe Year’s Best Fantasy Stories and The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror.
