About the Author:

Review

This was a quirky book.  I felt dragged along on the adventure, a slightly off-kilter but enjoyable ride.  Nash is a whiner who needs to grow up, and during the course of this adventure he does.  His whole life is upended and he is mad at everyone because it is their fault that things are not following his plan… which I’m not even sure he knows what it is.  He is one of those perpetual students who just doesn’t want to grow up because they enjoy being a child.

Then he is taken hostage during a bank robbery and FBI Special Agent Aleece Medina enters his life in her brash no nonsense way.  Aleece isn’t sure what to do with Nash.  His life is in danger, he needs protecting, she’s attracted to him and annoyed with him in the same instance.  Her zest for life may be just the thing Nash needs to get his act together… if they survive.

I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book, but this book is in a class by itself.  The heroes are deeply flawed.  The villains, with one glaring exception, are really not all that bad… in fact at least one or more are motivated by honorable intentions.  The author knows just how to turn a phrase to make you take a second look at a situation you thought you understood, only to find that perhaps it’s not what you thought at first, or even second, glance.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 clouds.

Alex’s smile disappeared along with her, and an eerie silence set in. It was as if we’d all witnessed a terrible train crash and were too shocked to speak. I could feel his glare but kept my eyes on the front door.

“You have ten seconds to explain,” he informed me.

I punched out the explanation so quickly, I had five seconds to spare. I could almost see his mind ticking over as he processed my confession.

“Of all the stupid things to do.” His reproach was warranted, and defending myself would only have added fuel to an already raging fire. “You’re like a mini terrorist. Are you trying to get us run out of town?”

Gabrielle’s tried to stop a giggle escaping. I turned my attention to Adam, “I think it was ingenious,” he murmured, revealing the dimple on his cheek.

“You are too easily charmed,” complained Alex, waving his hands as if he was showcasing the major prize in a game show. “Charli Blake is the kind of girl your mother warned you about, Adam. Nothing but trouble.”

So much for defending me to the death! If he hadn’t been so worked up it would have been funny. The only people in the room game enough to see the humour were those of French lineage.

“I would be more than happy to claim her,” Adam told him.

“Me too,” added Gabrielle, much to my surprise.

Alex shook his head. He marched to the front door and flipped the sign, declaring the shop shut for the rest of the day.

“Are you closing?” asked Gabrielle, checking her watch. “It’s early.”

“I’m done. If I don’t get out of here, I might explode,” he muttered, pushing past me to collect his coat.

I knew Alex was close to breaking point. Escaping the café before he had a chance to lock the door seemed like a good idea. I reached for Adam’s hand. “I’ll see you later.” I moved quickly, giving Alex no chance of calling me back. Adam turned to face him as we reached the door.

“I’ll have her home early.”

“I honestly don’t care,” Alex said wearily.

He sounded broken. For a horrible second I wondered if I’d finally pushed him too far. Perhaps in the process of slaying the Beautiful dragons I’d accidently assassinated my white knight too. I peeked at my brother. “Do you mean that?” My voice was small because I feared his answer.

Alex looked back at me for a long time. He didn’t look angry any more, just beaten. “No,” he said simply. And I believed him.

Review

I had a hard time writing this review.  This book was sweet mostly, but there were parts of it that I really didn’t like.  This 21 year old guy sleeps with the 17 year old girl.  In California that would get him put in jail as a sex offender.  I understand it was supposed to be sweet, but I felt like he was a bit of a player rather than a sweet boy in love with a girl who didn’t fit in her life but was genuinely special.

The book is nice, pleasant, just not terribly exciting.  It is well written.  It felt like you were reading someone’s journal and peeking into their life rather than reading a story, but I felt like the climax of the action (and I use that word loosely) was rather anti-climactic.

I should note however, that I read book 2 and it was much better.  It pulled on my emotions more, although the ending was terribly sad and made me angry at both characters.

I give this book 3 out of 5 clouds.  Like I said it was sweet.

About the Author:

Nicole MacDonald is a thirty something year old Kiwi who loves to read and moonlights as a novelist. From a young age she fantasized about being the heroine in the books and/or movies she watched and credits the series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ for really inspiring her. Writing only occurred to her a few years ago after reading an abysmal tale with silly useless females where upon she decided to write a tale solely for herself where the girls got to kick butt without the usual sob story—betrayed/abused/abandoned etc. That little tale eventuated into the BirthRight Trilogy.

Nicole’s current daydream is that Joss Whedon (aka the genius of film) will discover the BirthRight Trilogy and demand the film rights to it. Until then, she’s working on several other writing projects and aiming to explore the world with her partner.

Sian tipped her head up to press a kiss to Daron's jaw then scooted off the bed and went to look out the windows.

Outside the forest darkened as the sun dropped, and the sounds of the animals changed. The day dwellers were going to sleep, and the night dwellers began to venture out. The sense of awe at such a sight struck her again. The window misted with her breath when she pressed her forehead against it, looking up.

'Daron, what's that?'

Daron glanced up to see her pressed against the window, staring in fascination at something. Marking a place in the book, he climbed off the bed and joined her at the window. Flickering lights had begun to appear in the air, and clusters of nightbloom were opening as twilight turned to dusk. The glow of the delicate flowers was a soft gold in the dark and made him smile as he remembered trying to pick one for his mother.

'Those are nightbloom, Pix. They only open at night and are very delicate. You can't pick them,' he said wryly and she smiled.

'Tried?'

Daron nodded and opened the door to the balcony, gesturing for her to go out. Shutting the door behind them, he wrapped his arms around her as they gazed out.

'I really wanted to pick one for my mother when I was eight. My sister told me it wasn't possible, but I didn't believe her.' His older sister always knew the best, one way or another and even now, still loved to boss him and his younger brother around.

'She was right, as always. As soon as you touch a nightbloom they wither. Just those firefae can feed from them.'

'Firefae? Like Cat's fire?' Sian watched as one flitted close.

'No, they don't burn. They just glow. During their mating season they turn pink.'

One rested on the handrail. Sian watched as Daron coaxed it onto his hand.

'Have a look, Pix.'

She gently cupped his hands and bent to stare at the little creature. The tiny firefae watched her with large dark eyes. It glowed, a lovely orange shade, and the energy it used hummed through Daron's hand and hers.

'It's beautiful.'

It was kind of like the pictures of fairies she'd seen on Earth. A human-like shape but you couldn't tell its sex. Its tiny body was covered with fine, hair-like filaments, so it almost looked fuzzy. The wings that it flitted around with were shaped like a fan, the edges almost ragged, floating softly in the night air. Its large eyes were surrounded with beautiful long lashes, making the little creature look adorable. A second firefae landed next to it, and Sian quietly gasped. This one had hair, or what looked like it, that surrounded its head in a golden mane.

'That's a male,' Daron breathed the words as the two fae seemed to dance on his hand.

'How can you tell?'

'The gold mane.'

She watched the two interact together, marveling at their tiny hands and feet. Each digit had a slightly bulbous end, reminding her of frogs' feet. The fae wandered about Daron's hand for a bit longer, then pushed off, their delicate wings fluttering as they flew away to the nearest nightbloom.

They spent nearly an hour out there, watching as the forest turned to inky blackness. There were quite a few plants and creatures that were luminescent. It made the dark beautiful and eerie, reminding Sian of footage she'd seen of deep undersea dives. When they retired to bed, she snuggled up to Daron as he gently stroked her back.

'Pleased to be here?'

'I am. It's really lovely,' she yawned. 'I'll have to give Gredel a big hug for this.'

Review

Okay, so if you read the review of book 1(link) you know that I freaked out when it ended abruptly.  Good thing I had book 2 to read so that I could continue the story.  Book 2 picks up right after book 1 ends and just gets better and better.  First we find out surprising information about Cat and all three of the other girls, but mostly Cat.  Then they prepare for battle with the evil witch woman.

As they prepare to go to war something horrendous happens. It is so horrible that it throws one of the girls in to full elemental status and pushes everyone to a new fervor for the coming war.  I spent most of the end of the book in tears.

And while the book does not end so horribly abruptly, it does end on a disconcerting note as you find that the sorcerous is not as virtuous as initially thought.  At least it was disconcerting to me.

I so love this series.  I am totally hooked and involved in this story.  And even though it is after midnight, I have to read book 3 because I can’t just leave the story here.
